Known as "El Sol de Mexico," and renowned for not only being one of the high-grossing live performances in Mexico but also the top Latino touring artist since 1990 with $278.5 million in earnings, Luis Miguel is a Mexican singer and one of the the best-selling Latin artist of that decade, famous for popularizing bolero music genre. Luis started his career in 1981, and as of 2024, the music star holds the record for the most top-10 hits on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart.
Luis was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Luis was the son of Spanish singer Luisito Rey and Italian mother Marcela Basteri, the family moved to Mexico City in the late 70s due to his father's music career.
By 84, at only 15 years of age, Luis embraced the pop-rock genre and released the album "Palabra de Honor." By 86, Luis took a break due to tensions with his father over financial mismanagement. After singing a huge record deal one year later, Luis released the album "Soy Como Quiero Ser" which was a huge success, selling over 2 million copies.
By 91, Luis Miguel released "Romance," an album of romantic boleros from the 1950s, credited with modernizing the genre. "Romance," became his most successful album, and sold over 7 million copies. 2 years later, he released one more album, called "Aries," which led Luis to win a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. That same year, in 93, the legendary Frank Sinatra invited Luis to collaborate on an album and perform in a special program celebrating Frank Sinatra's 80th birthday. The TV special also had the special contributions of Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, and others.
In 97, Luis released "Romances," making his influence on the bolero genre even stronger. The album sold over 5 million copies and once again made Luis win Grammy awards. After releasing "Mis Romances" in 2001, Luis went on a world tour to support the album.
In 2010, Luis Miguel made one of the biggest world tours ever done in history. The Luis Miguel Tour went through 22 countries over three years, with 223 shows, making it the longest and highest-grossing tour by a Latin artist.
