Famous within the classical and folk communities, Ludovico Maria Enrico Einaudi OMRI, also known by his stage name, Ludovico Einaudi, was born in 1955 in Italy. Ludovico is a pianist and composer who became really famous by bringing together rock, pop, and classical music in the same place. Ludovico has scored numerous films and TV productions, including "This Is England."
Ludovico was born in the city of Turin, His dad, Mr. Giulio, was a notable publisher who worked with authors like Italo Calvino and Primo Levi and founded Giulio Einaudi Editore. Ludovico's paternal grandfather, Luigi Einaudi, served as President of Italy from 1948 to 1955. His mother, Ms. Renata, played piano and was the daughter of a very famous pianist and opera conductor.
With this background filled with music, Ludovico began composing music as a teenager, initially using a folk guitar. He pursued formal musical training at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan, where he earned a diploma in composition in 1982. That same year, he attended an orchestration class by Luciano Berio and received a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival.
After finishing his studies at the music school in Milan and learning from Mr. Berio, Ludovico initially focused on writing classical music, including pieces for small groups and orchestras.
Ludovico once said that Berio taught him orchestration and fostered an open-minded approach to music, also being open-minded and letting be influenced by more specific genres like African music, soul, and contemporary music.
Ludovico's work is characterized by its ambient, meditative, and introspective nature, drawing on elements of minimalism and contemporary pop. He has also collaborated with international musicians like Ballaké Sissoko.
In the mid-1990s, Ludovico began creating music for movies, starting with Michele Sordillo's films "Da qualche parte in città" in 1994 and "Acquario" in 1996, which earned him the Grolla d'oro award for best soundtrack. He continued his success in film scoring with works like "Treno di panna" in 1998 and Dominick Tambasco's "Giorni dispari." Just to mention a few of his most successful ones.
In 2009, Ludovico released "Nightbook", marking a departure with its inclusion of synthesized sounds alongside his piano compositions. Ludovico said that the album was inspired by Anselm Kiefer and Einaudi's performance. Just like his master, Mr. Berio taught him. With this open-minded style, the album also had electronic elements. "Nightbook" achieved Gold status in Italy, selling over 35k copies.
