Lionel Richie Biography

Picture a young tennis player at Tuskegee Institute, studying to become an Episcopal priest who couldn't read or write music - that's where Lionel Richie's story begins, a music legend known for his contributions to funk and rhythm and blues, and also, the group The Commodores. Born in 1949 on the campus Booker T. Washington himself helped build, living in a house Washington had gifted his family, young Lionel was surrounded by history before he started making it himself.

The plot thickens with a family tree that includes a great-grandfather who was likely a federal judge's son and founded a major post-Civil War Black fraternal organization. Talk about roots running deep!

Then came The Commodores in 1968, where this economics graduate turned saxophone player found his true calling writing ballads. While the band was getting funky with "Brick House," Richie was penning love songs like "Easy" and "Three Times a Lady" that would define an era.

Going solo in 1982? That was just the warm-up. "Can't Slow Down" dropped in '83, selling 20 million copies and snagging Album of the Year. Then came the string of hits - "Hello," "All Night Long," co-writing "We Are the World" with Michael Jackson, and grabbing an Oscar for "Say You, Say Me." Not bad for a guy who started out playing tennis!

These days, he's judging "American Idol," performing at King Charles III's coronation, and somehow becoming such a big deal in the Middle East that his music reportedly played during the 2003 invasion of Baghdad.

Richie married Brenda Harvey in 1975, and they adopted Nicole Richie in 1983 when she was two years old. After their divorce in 1993, he married Diane Alexander in 1995, having two children with her: Miles and Sofia Richie, before they split in 2004. He dealt with throat issues but found help through holistic medicine, and became a grandfather in 2008 when Nicole had a child with Joel Madden from "Good Charlotte," followed by another grandchild in 2009. Beyond his family life, Richie is a Freemason and raised over $3.1 million for breast cancer research, inspired by his grandmother who survived the disease.

From adopting Nicole Richie (now making him a proud grandpa through her marriage to Good Charlotte's Joel Madden) to raising millions for breast cancer research in honor of his survivor grandmother, Richie keeps proving that sometimes the biggest hearts write the best love songs.
