Leonard Albert Kravitz is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on May 26, 1964 in New York City, New York. Kravitz is the son of NBC News producer Sy Kravitz and actress Roxie Roker, best known for her role on the CBS sitcom “The Jeffersons”. He learnt to play the drums early on as a child, then also picked up the guitar. At age 10, he joined the California Boy Choir. Around this time, he found rock music, with acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin having a major influence on him.
Early in his music career, Kravitz went by the stage name “Romeo Blue”. In 1985, he teamed up with recording engineer and musician Henry Hirch to record first a demo tape, then a full-length self-produced debut album, funded by his father. The production was done by 1988, and, through a contact his mother knew from her TV actress career, he was able to shop that record around major labels. Kravitz ended up getting offers from 5 of them, and ultimately went with Virgin Records. Thus, his debut album, “Let Love Rule”, was released in September 1989. It saw moderate success, peaking at the #61 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. The next year, he went on his first nationwide Lenny Kravitz concert tour to promote his debut record.
He saw increasing popularity throughout the 1990’s, with his 4th album, “Circus” from September 1995, reaching the top 10 on Billboard 200. The New York-native rock star put out a total of 11 studio albums over his career. The best selling one among them is “5” from May 1998, which sold about 4.5 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Lenny Kravitz album came out in September 2018, with the title “Raise Vibration”. In August 2015, he had an infamous incident when he accidentally exposed his penis at a Lenny Kravitz concert in Stockholm, Sweden.
Kravitz’s biggest hits to date are “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over” (1991), “Fly Away” (1998), “I Belong to You” (also 1998), and “Again” (2000). Also, he played the role of Cinna in the Hunger Games film series; and appeared in the Half Time Show at Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, headlined by Katy Perry.
