Born in 1970 in Brussels to a Belgian father and an Italian mother, Lara Fabian's path to become one of the best-selling artists in Belgium started early. Growing up between Catania and Ruisbroek, speaking Italian as her mother tongue, she showed such musical promise that her parents enrolled her in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels when she was just eight years old.
The 1980s gave way to young Fabian testing her wings in European competitions, and her big break came when she represented Luxembourg during the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988. Her song "Croire" came fourth (when Celine Dion won for Switzerland), the single becoming her first major hit with almost 500k copies sold across Europe.
But in 1990, she made a more radical change of pace - relocating to Montreal with musical collaborator Rick Allison. Starting their own label, Productions Clandestines, by 1991 her self-titled French debut album had sold over 100k copies in Canada. But it was 1994's "Carpe diem" that really put her on the map, going gold in just three weeks.
Her star continued to rise throughout the late '90s, with her album "Pure" selling over two million copies in France alone. By 1999, she'd conquered Europe and set her sights on the English-speaking market, recording her first English album in New York and San Francisco. The gamble paid off - her dance-pop hit "I Will Love Again" topped the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and even made waves on the Hot 100.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Fabian would continue to work, recording songs in multiple languages and experimenting with different musical genres. She worked with film composer Igor Krutoy and Turkish artist Mustafa Ceceli among many others, took time to work on movie soundtracks such as "AI: Artificial Intelligence" and "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within".
Indeed, she is an internationally acclaimed artist who has sold more than 20 million records worldwide, has to her credit fourteen studio albums, and has been in the business for three decades. Whether she sings in French, English, Italian, or Russian, Fabian has always managed to maintain her distinct emotional depth while continuing to push the boundaries of her art. In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, she even released "Lockdown Sessions," an experimental collection showing she's still willing to explore new musical territories.
