King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, often shortened to King Gizzard, is an Australian psychedelic rock band. They were formed in 2010 in Melbourne, Australia. The founding members were vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist Stu Mackenzie (born in 1990 in Melbourne, Australia), vocalist, harmonica player, and saxophonist Ambrose Kenny-Smith, guitarist and bassist Joey Walker, guitarist and bassist Cook Craig, drummer Eric Moore, drummer and percussionist Michael Cavanagh, and bassist and pianist Lucas Harwood.
Out of the original line-up, Mackenzie, Moore, and Walker were studying music industry at RMIT University. Through mutual friends, they put together the band’s first full roster, listed above, in 2010. Their odd name, “King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard”, was a compromise between Mackenzie’s idea, “Gizzard Gizzard”, and another suggestion by an unidentified member, “Lizard King”, which was the nickname of American musician-poet Jim Morrison of “The Doors”. Also in 2010, they put out their first two singles. Keeping with the unusual naming patterns, these were titled “Sleep / Summer” and “Hey There / Ants & Bats”. Their first EP was released in 2011.
Their second EP, also from 2011, was backed by Australian indie label Shock Records. It was received well by the critics. The King Gizzard debut album came out in September 2012, with the title “12 Bar Bruise”. It ended up peaking at the #14 spot on the ARIA chart in Australia.
Since then, the remarkably prolific Aussie rock band has put out 22 more studio albums, thus they have 23 (!) in total, despite being a relatively young band. The best selling one among them is “Flying Microtonal Banana” from February 2017, which peaked at #2 on the charts in Australia and at #170 on the famous Billboard 200 chart over in the US. Meanwhile, the latest new King Gizzard & Lizard Wizard album came out in October 2022, with the title “Changes”. In 2015, they started their very own annual music festival, “Gizzfest”, which starts in Melbourne every summer, then tours Australia, with many King Gizzard & Lizard Wizard concert shows as the main attraction along the way.
Their biggest hits to date are “People‐Vultures” (2016), “Gamma Knife” (also 2016), “Rattlesnake” (2017), and “If Not Now, Then When?” (2021).
