Goo Goo Dolls is an American rock band. They were formed in 1986 in Buffalo, New York. The founding members were guitarist and lead vocalist John Rzeznik (1965, Buffalo, New York), bassist and vocalist Robby Takac (1964, Buffalo, New York), and drummer George Tutuska (1965).
Takac and Tutuska were childhood friends. Reznik played in the band “The Beaumonts” with Takac's cousin, Paul Takac, that’s how the three founders met. In 1986, with all three of them in their early 20’s, they decided to form a cover band called “Goo Goo Dolls’. In a 2022 interview, lead singer Rzeznik claimed that he does not remember how they got that name, and even saying “it’s kind of a stupid name”. However, in 1999, Rolling Stone Magazine published the claim that they got it from a toy ad.
The Goo Goo Dolls moved on from covers to original compositions early on. Their first album came out within a year of their formation. In June 1987, their debut album, the self-titled “Goo Goo Dolls”, was released through Mercenary and Celluloid Records. It was a punk rock record, which failed to gain any significant commercial traction. However, the band kept doing Goo Goo Dolls concert shows in small venues in the Buffalo area, even opening for bands such as Green Day and Motörhead.
Mainstream success finally found the punk-rock band in 1995. Their single “Name” off of their fifth studio album topped Billboard’s rock singles chart and reached the #5 spot on the overall Billboard Hot 100 chart. As a result, the album, “A Boy Named Goo” from March 1995, peaked at the #27 spot on Billboard 200. However, due to a dispute over payments from the band’s new hits, co-founder and drummer Tutuska decided to leave them behind. He was replaced by Mike Malinin.
Overall, Goo Goo Dolls have produced 14 full studio albums. The best selling one among them is “Dizzy Up the Girl” from September 1998, which sold 4.2 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Goo Goo Dolls album came out in August 2022, with the title “Chaos in Bloom”. The Buffalo rockstars’ biggest hits to date are the aforementioned "Name" (1995), “Iris” (1998), "Slide" (also 1998), and "Better Days" (2006).
