Known for being the opening and ending themes of the famous anime Death Note, Maximum the Hormone (マキシマム ザ ホルモン) is a heavy metal band from Tokyo, Japan. The band's heavy style made them gain a huge fan base not only in Japan but all over the world. With the popularity of the J-rock genre, Maximum the Hormone made their way to success with singles like "What's Up, People?!" and "Zetsubō Billy."

The band debuted in 97, but since 99, the band has had Daisuke-han singing, Nao on drums, Maximum the Ryo-kun playing guitar, and Ue-chang on bass. They all take turns singing the main parts in songs, except for Ue-chang, who mostly does backup vocals.

Even though Maximum the Hormone is considered to be a heavy metal band, these music geniuses never limited themselves to it. Some of their songs have particular styles. Like mixing j-ska and hip-hop. Some people often compare the band with System of a Down, which always brought this psychedelic style to their songs.

The band's popularity started when they dropped their album "Kusoban" in 2002. It had a blend of hardcore punk and metal. Maximum The Hormone's fearless and upfront style caught the eye of metal fans, earning them a loyal fanbase and praise for their fresh approach.

If you're wondering what is the meaning of the band's name, well, the guitarist Maximum the Ryo-kun once said: "Take it as you like, it means anything from the Japanese cuisine for cooking animal innards to the sensation of the maximum amount of your hormones coming to the boil! Although when we go abroad people think we’re just some sorta sexual-energy-drink". Whatever that means, we 100% agree with it!

Here's a quick fun fact: In 2009, Marty Friedman, the guitarist from Megadeth, played his own version of "Tsume Tsume Tsume" without any singing on his tribute album called Tokyo Jukebox. This only shows how the band is appreciated and respect everywhere.

In 2021, the band put out a track called "Kamigami" (神噛, meaning "Gods" or "God Biting"). It served as the opening song for the anime Record of Ragnarok.
