EXO Biography

Known for being one of the K-pop boy bands that paved the way for other K-pop groups, EXO is a group formed by SM Entertainment in Seoul, South Korea in 2011 with their debut being in 2012. The group brings an innovative fusion of alternative R&B, pop, hip-hop, and electronic, all within the realm of the K-pop genre. EXO's debut studio album, "XOXO," came out in 2013, featuring the hit single "Growl." Critics praised the album, and it sold over one million copies, including its repackage.

The group members Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun, used to perform songs in Korean and Mandarin, respectively, until they released their third EP, "Overdose," in 2014 (Known as Exo-K and Exo-M). The idea of performing in these two languages came from Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man. The businessman unveiled plans to introduce a new boy band divided into two sub-groups. Each subgroup would promote the same music simultaneously in both South Korea and China.

In 2015, EXO started their second big world tour, Exoplanet 2 – The Exo'luxion, in Seoul at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena. They dropped their second album, Exodus, on March 30, 2015, with both Korean and Mandarin versions. The main song, "Call Me Baby," came out early on March 27 because some versions got out online. The music videos came out four days later.

EXO became a national symbol and also representative of Korean music and Korean culture overseas, as proof of that, the group performed at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang on February 25, serving as representatives of K-pop along with CL.

The band has also been in some controversy, in 2014, Kris Wu (吴亦凡) ceased promoting with EXO and its subunit, Exo-M, due to the lawsuit he filed against SM Entertainment.
