BTS Biography

BTS is a South Korean K-pop band founded in 2010 in Seoul, South Korea. The seven founding (and also current) members are Kim Seok-jin “Jin” (born in 1992 in Gwacheon, South Korea), Min Yoon-gi “Suga” (1993, Daegu), Jung Ho-seok “J-Hope” (1994, Gwangju), Kim Nam-joon “RM” (1994, Seoul), Park Ji-min “Jimin” (1995, Busan), Kim Tae-hyung “V” (1995, Daegu), and Jeon Jung-kook (1997, Busan).

BTS was created by Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk in 2010. It was originally supposed to be a hip-hop group formed around talented up-and-coming rapper RM. However, because the Korean music industry was on a decline at the time, Si-hyuk decided to go with a safer route and make them into a pop band. It ended up being a very lucrative bet, as the early 2010’s saw a K-pop boom in the largest consumer market in the world, the US, mainly facilitated by the unprecedented success of Psy’s “Gangnam Style”.

Their name is an acronym for the Korean word "방탄소년단" ("Bangtan Sonyeondan"), which is usually translated to English as "Bulletproof Boy Scouts".

Between the time of their formation and their debut single, the group was posting song covers on Soundcloud and YouTube. There were also BTS concerts held across Korea. That debut single finally came out in June 2013, with the title “No More Dream”.

Their first album was released in August 2014, entitled “Dark & Wild”. It became a moderate international hit, peaking at the #3 spot on Billboard’s US World Albums list, and at the #27 spot on their new artist-specific “Heatseekers” list. In their home country of South Korea, they were second on the charts.

However, their first real international hit didn’t come their way until the November 2015 release of their song “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2”. It was the first of their songs that got onto the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. This allowed them to book a slew of live performances in America, including one at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So far, the Korean boyband put out a total of 9 studio albums. The best selling one of them has been 2020’s “Map of the Soul: 7”, which sold over 4.8 million copies in South Korea alone. Meanwhile, their most recent new BTS album is called “Be”, released in November 2020.

BTS’s biggest hits to date are “DNA” (2017), “IDOL” (2018), ”Boy with Luv” feat. Halsey (2019),  and “Dynamite” (2020).

In May 2021, the music video for their new song “Butter” broke the record for most views accumulated within 24 hours of upload on YouTube. The video got 108.2 million hits within a day. BTS is known for their passionate and sometimes overzealous fans, both online or at a BTS concert. Their fandom is referred to by themselves as “the A.R.M.Y.”And it's a plentiful army. BTS has 60 million followers on their Instagram alone, making them the most popular musical group on the image sharing platform.

In June 2022, fans of the Korean boy band went through quite a scare. During their annual FESTA dinner commemorating the release of their debut album, Jimin complained about a “rough patch” in the band’s career. Suga went as far as announcing a hiatus.

However, soon thereafter, their management company clarified that BTS is in fact not taking a break, nor are they breaking up, but the members will have a little more time to focus on developing as solo artists. Since then, they have returned as a group on a new episode of their online variety show “Run BTS”.

Almost done watching their documentary. While I've always loved their music and respected their hard work, discovering the extent of their journey to the top and seeing how they've remained humble and dedicated to their fans, especially the Army, has deepened my respect and love for them. Hoping to snag tickets for their return tour in 2025!
