Example Biography

Elliot John Gleave, better known by his stage name Example, is an English singer, rapper, and DJ. He was born on June 20th, 1982 in London, United Kingdom. As a child, he was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. As a teenager, he became fascinated with hip hop music, specifically with the Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg, which inspired him to start rapping. His first public performance was at a rap battle at a house party, which he claims to have won decisively.

He went on to get a degree in media arts from Royal Holloway, University of London. During his college years, Gleave also started to release music he produced with his partner Joseph Gardner, aka Rusher. However, his first job in the entertainment industry was only tangentially connected to music: he got a gig as a voiceover artist and editor for Comedy Central and MTV.

His first single that received significant attention from the industry was “I Don’t Want to Go,” which he released in January 2006. It led to a contract with the record label The Beats. By that time, he was using his stage name "Example", which was given by a school friend after his initials E. G.

His debut album came out in September 2007, with the title “What We Made”. However, it failed to gain any significant commercial success.

In June 2010, he released his sophomore album “Won’t Go Quietly”. It was released through the label Data, since Example’s initial label, The Beats, went out of business in 2007. The record ended up being a moderate hit, peaking at #4 on the OCC chart in the UK.

Example went on to release 6 more full studio albums, thus he has 8 in total. The best selling one among them is “Playing in the Shadows” from September 2011, which ended up topping the OCC chart in the UK. Meanwhile, the latest new Example album came out in June 2022, with the title “We May Grow Old But We Never Grow Up”.

The biggest hits in the Example setlist to date are “Kickstarts” (2010), “Changed the Way You Kiss Me” (2011), and “All Night” (2019). He was also featured on the hit track "We’ll Be Coming Back" by Calvin Harris in 2012. Example has also tried his hand in other art forms, such as stand-up comedy and documentary filmmaking. He produced a short documentary about the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 2006. You can check when the next Example concert is playing near you on this page.
