Djavan Biography
Djavan is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist known for blending samba, soul, and MPB (música popular brasileira), born January 27, 1949, in Maceió, Brazil.
Over a career spanning five decades, he's earned Latin Grammy nominations across multiple categories and become one of Brazil's most covered songwriters, with artists like Al Jarreau and The Manhattan Transfer recording his compositions.
Djavan got his start playing Beatles covers in the group Luz, Som, Dimensão before moving to Rio de Janeiro in 1973 to sing soap opera soundtracks. His debut album, A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan, arrived in 1976 and included the hit "Flor de Lis" — a song later covered by artists like Sandra De Sá.
His profile rose further in 1982 when Stevie Wonder guested on the track "Samurai" from his album Luz, helping introduce Djavan to American audiences through a CBS Records deal.
Djavan continued releasing acclaimed albums through the '80s, '90s, and beyond, with his 1999 live album Ao Vivo selling 1.2 million copies. He picked up Latin Grammy nominations in 2016 for Record of the Year and Album of the Year, and his 2018 record Vesúvio was ranked among Brazil's best albums of the year by Rolling Stone Brasil.
