Daft Punk Biography

Daft Punk is a French electronic music duo. They were founded in 1993 in Paris, France. The founding members were Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (born in 1974 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) and Thomas Bangalter (1975, Paris, France).

Homem-Christo and Bangalter attended the same high school in Paris, and first met in 1987. They originally formed the alt rock band “Darlin’” named after a 1967 song by The Beach Boys. That band,  which also included a third member, lasted only less than a year, from 1992 to 1993. In 1993, however, the two musicians shifted their focus to electronic music. Thus, “Daft Punk” was born.

The demo tape was discovered by Scottish DJ Stuart Macmillan at a rave at Disneyland Paris. Daft Punk's debut single, “The New Wave,” came out in 1994, but only as a limited release. They did not have to wait for their first hit much, however. “Da Funk,” released in 1995, ended up becoming a major hit, even topping the US Dance Club Songs chart by Billboard.

Their debut album, “Homework,” came out in January 1997, through the labels Virgin Records and Soma Quality Recordings. It too was a success, peaking at the #3 spot on the SNEP chart in their home country of France; while also breaking into the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US, at the #150 spot. From 1999 onward, the band members started performing in their now-signature robot suits at Daft Punk concert shows.

However, what really gave Daft Punk their international recognition was their 2007 live album "Alive 2007". That success allowed them to be featured in ad campaigns such as Gap and Adidas. They even appeared alongside such superstars as English soccer star David Beckham and American rapper Snoop Dogg in the latter.

In 2021, Homem-Christo and Bangalter announced they are abandoning the Daft Punk project. Explanation only came years later, in 2023, when Bangalter said in an interview that they felt they had achieved everything they could with the band, and did not want to “ruin the narrative”.

Daft Punk has released a total of 4 full studio albums during their career. The last new Daft Punk album came out in May 2013, with the title “Random Access Memories”. Meanwhile, the best selling album in their discography is "Discovery" from 2001, which sold over 2.6 million copies worldwide.

The biggest hits in the Daft Punk tracklist are “One More Time” (2001), “Get Lucky” (2013) featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, and “Instant Crush” (also 2013) featuring Julian Casablancas. They were also featured on the hit 2016 R&B song by The Weeknd “Starboy”.
