When you utter the golden years of disco, one just won't skip Boney M. This powerhouse group burst onto the scene in 1974, lighting up dance floors across the globe. German producer Frank Farian put together a dynamic quartet: Jamaican singers Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett, Montserrat's Maizie Williams, and Aruba's Bobby Farrell. While the lineup would change over the decades, these infectious beats with unforgettable hooks kept them dancing.
You may not know the name, but you'll know the hits: "Daddy Cool", "Ma Baker", "Rasputin", "Rivers of Babylon", and "Mary's Boy Child" are all disco staples. They have sold millions of records around the world and have left an indelible mark on pop music history.
The story begins with Farian himself, recording "Baby Do You Wanna Bump" late in 1974. He laid down both the deep vocals and falsetto chorus, issuing it under the name "Boney M." - inspired by an Australian TV detective show he'd caught the end of one day. Once the track had caught fire in the Netherlands and Belgium, Farian knew he needed faces for his creation. Then came model-turned-singer Maizie Williams, dancer Bobby Farrell, and Marcia Barrett. Barrett brought in Liz Mitchell, fresh from the Les Humphries Singers, to complete the iconic lineup.
Their first album, "Take the Heat off Me", came out in 1976, but it didn't exactly set the world on fire. The group hit the road hard, playing everywhere from packed discos to small-town fairs, building their reputation one show at a time. Their big break came when German TV producer Michael "Mike" Leckebusch caught their act and booked them for his show "Musikladen." But when they sang "Daddy Cool" on that September evening, in all their finery, everything was different. The song shot to number one in West Germany and, almost overnight, Boney M. was everywhere.
