Beyoncé Biography

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, better known by her stage mononym Beyoncé, is an American singer, songwriter, music producer, and actress. She was born on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas. Beyoncé grew up in a religious family and attended a Catholic elementary school where she took dance classes. Her singing talent was discovered by her dance instructor. At age 7, she won a school talent show with her rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine". She joined the church choir and went on to attend the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.

At age 8, Beyoncé joined the girl group "Girl's Tyme", with whom she appeared on the national talent search TV show Star Search. In 1995, the group was signed by the label Grass Roots Entertainment. The next year, in 1996, they changed their name to "Destiny's Child".

The freshly renamed R&B group released their first, self-titled debut album, "Destiny's Child", in February 1998. It became a hit, peaking at the #14 spot on Billboard's Hip Hop/R&B charts, and on the #67 spot on the famous overall Billboard 200 chart. They produced 4 more widely successful albums together. The last one came out in 2004, with a title that suggested the end: “Destiny Fulfilled”. Beyoncé had already announced her departure from the group to focus on her solo projects in 2001, she just joined the reunion to make one last album with her group in 2004.

Her debut solo album was released in June 2003, entitled “Dangerously in Love”. That too became a massive hit, selling 11 million copies worldwide, and topping the Billboard 200 upon its release. The standout track on the record was “Crazy in Love”, featuring her future husband Jay-Z.

Since then, the American R&B superstar has released 6 more solo albums since, thus she has 7 in total. The best selling one among them has remained her first one, “Dangerously in Love”. Meanwhile, the new Beyoncé album came out in July 2022, called “Renaissance”. Beyoncé’s biggest hits to date are “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” 2008, “Halo” (also 2008), “Drunk in Love” (2013) featuring her husband Jay-Z, and “7/11” (2014). In 2018, she went on a Beyoncé concert tour called "On the Run II Tour" with Jay-Z, which ended up being one of the highest grossing tours of all time with $253 million in combined ticket sales.

She is one of the best selling artists of all time, having sold 160 million copies of her albums in total. She’s also the first artist ever to have all of her first 7 solo albums debut #1 on Billboard 200. In addition, she has also  appeared in a number of movies, such as “Austin Powers in Goldmember” (2002), “Pink Panther” (2006), or the 2019 remake of the classic Disney movie “Lion King”.
