Barry Manilow Biography

Barry Maniow, born as Barry Alan Pincus, is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on June 17, 1943 in New York City, New York. After high school, he briefly attended City College of New York and worked for the television network CBS, before transferring to the New York College of Music. Later, he also went to Juilliard Performing Arts School where he studied musical theater.

After he got done with his studies, he made a living as a pianist and songwriter. In 1964, he was asked by a director at CBS to arrange some music for a musical adaptation of a melodrama titled “The Drunkard”. However, instead, Manilow wrote a full original score for the play, which went on to have a successful Off Broadway run. He then moved on to write commercial jingles for major companies, such as State Farm Insurance and Band-Aid. He also sang some commercial tunes that he didn’t write, these included ads for McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pepsi. In 1969, Manilow was signed by Columbia/CBS Music to be part of a new musical ensemble called “The Featherbed”. However, after the release of four singles by the group with no commercial success, CBS abandoned the project and let Manilow walk from the contract. Meanwhile, Manilow started writing for American pop diva Bette Midler.

This made way for him to release his self-titled debut album as a solo artist, “Barry Manilow”, in July 1973. It became quite a success, peaking at the #28 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US. As a result, he got to go on his first nationwide Barry Manilow concert tour as a headlining act in 1974.

Over his long career spanning over 5 decades, the New York rock star has released no less than 31 full studio albums. The best selling one among them is “Even Now” from February 1978, which sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Barry Manilow album came out in February 2020, with the title “Night Songs II”. The biggest hits in the Barry Manilow setlist to date are “Weekend in New England” (1976), “Can’t Smile Without You” (1978), “Somewhere in the Night” (also 1978), and “It Never Rains in Southern California” (2007).
