BNL, also known as Barenaked Ladies, is an alternative pop band hailing from Toronto, Canada. The group gained a lot of popularity in 91 with their self-titled cassette, and the first independent release to go gold in Canada. Barenaked Ladies' debut album was released in 92, 4 years after the band was founded, and it was called "Gordon," but their major success came in 98 with the album "Stunt." An interesting fact is that Barenaked Ladies composed the theme for the TV series The Big Bang Theory.
BNL started as a duo and then expanded to a quintet, with a few lineup changes over the years. Starting as a duo, the band was composed of Ed Robertson and Steven Page. Ed and Steven became friends after attending a Peter Gabriel concert, the two friends quickly felt a unique connection and love for music and improvised their first gig as Barenaked Ladies. Their first tape was recorded at home but gained a lot of attention after opening for the comedy group Corky and the Juice Pigs. Andy and Jim Creeggan joined, but Andy left for a student exchange, and Tyler Stewart became the drummer.
BNL's first commercial release, "The Yellow Tape," came out in 91 and despite not being accepted by labels, the group gained attention by performing live. Later a controversy surged with the band's name, which led to increased media attention, boosting sales and making "The Yellow Tape" the first indie release to go platinum in Canada. The group's first full album, "Gordon," was released in 92 and instantly became a hit in Canada. Later, BNL's second album, "Maybe You Should Drive," was less popular, and Andy Creeggan left the band to study music.
In 96, they released "Born on a Pirate Ship" as a quartet, gaining attention with "Shoe Box" on the Friends soundtrack and "The Old Apartment" video. In 2004, the band released "Barenaked for the Holidays," One year later, they worked on a TV pilot and music for a Shakespeare play, and participated in Live 8. By 2009, Barenaked Ladies and Steven Page announced his departure by mutual agreement, with the band continuing as a quartet. A new album came out one year later, named "All in Good Time" of 2010, was well-received and led the band to tour in the United States and some other countries. Their 13th album, "Detour de Force," came out in 2021, and by 2023, they released their 14th album, "In Flight," which received mixed reviews.
