Anita Baker Biography

Anita Baker, born Anita Denise Baker on January 26, 1958, is an American singer-songwriter known for her soulful ballads. Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Baker's music falls within the genre of rhythm and blues, with a focus on quiet storm, a radio format characterized by smooth and mellow tracks. In the late 1970s, Anita Baker began her career with the funk band Chapter 8.

Baker later released her first solo album, "The Songstress," in 1983. Her big breakthrough came in 1986 with the release of her second album, "Rapture," which became a hit and included the Grammy-winning song "Sweet Love." By 2017, Baker had won eight Grammy Awards and achieved four Platinum albums and two Gold albums. Known for her deep singing voice, Baker has a range of almost three octaves.

Some of Anita Baker's most famous songs include "Caught Up in the Rapture," and "Giving You the Best That I Got." These tracks showcase her captivating voice and ability to evoke raw emotions through her performances.

After teaming up with Frank Sinatra on his Duets album, Anita Baker made a chart comeback in 1994 with her album "Rhythm of Love." The album included the song "Body and Soul," her first top 40 pop hit since 1989. Her second single, the mid-tempo "I Apologize," earned her an eighth Grammy Award. The album became a huge success, selling over 2 million copies and marking her fourth consecutive platinum-selling album. Baker went on the Rhythm of Love World Tour from December 14, 1994, to November 14, 1995. In 1996, she moved to a different label within the Warner Music Group, joining Atlantic Records.

In 2004, Anita Baker made a comeback to live performances and signed with Blue Note Records in March. By September of the same year, she released the album "My Everything," which reached number four on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B charts, earning a gold certification.

Baker reentered the spotlight in February 2013, showcasing her talents on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" where she performed "Lately" and "Same Ole Love." During the same month, she participated in the Grammys, with "Lately" earning a nomination for Best R&B Performance. In January 2017, Baker announced her retirement, but in a surprising turn of events, she emerged from retirement in 2018.

In a recent event, Anita Baker sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field before the 2022 NFC Championship Game featuring the Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. As of now, Baker resides in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.
