Muse is an English rock band. They were formed in 1994 in Teignmouth, United Kingdom. The founding members were lead singer, guitarist, and keyboardist Matt Bellamy (born in 1978 in Cambridge, United Kingdom), bassist and backing vocalist Chris Wolstenholme (1978, Rotherham, United Kingdom), and drummer Dominic Howard (1977, Manchester, United Kingdom). Remarkably, the band’s line-up has stayed intact for almost 30 years.
The three members all attended Teignmouth Community College, playing for different bands initially. However, they ended up becoming band members after all, in a goth-glam group named “Carnage Mayhem”, which eventually got renamed “Rocket Baby Dolls”. Under that name, they won the Battle of the Bands competition in 1994, despite putting on a performance that was meant as more of a protest (it included the breaking of their on-stage equipment) than an actual contender. This gave Bellamy, Wolstenholme, and Howard enough confidence to quit their jobs and pursue music as their careers. They also settled on a new band name, “Muse”.
They started playing their first early Muse concert shows in big metropolitan areas, such as Manchester and London, shortly after. In 1998, the band put out their first professionally produced record, the self-titled “Muse EP”, through the label Dangerous. Their second EP, "Muscle Museum" from 1999, ended up becoming a hit, reaching the #3 spot on the indie charts in the UK. As a result, they even got to perform a Muse concert show at Woodstock ‘99 over in the US.
Muse’s first album came out in September 1999, with the title “Showbiz”. It ended up being a moderate hit, peaking at the #29 spot on the OCC chart in the UK. Their next album, “Origin of Symmetry” performed a lot better in their home country (reaching #3 on the charts). However, Muse achieved international stardom with the release of their fourth record, “Black Holes and Revelations” in July 2006, which not only topped the lists in the UK, but also reached #9 on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US.
Overall, the British alt rock band has put out 9 full studio albums during their career. The best selling one among them is the aforementioned “Black Holes and Revelations” from 2006, which sold over 3.2 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Muse album came out in August 2022, with the title “Will of the People”.
The biggest hits in the Muse setlist to date are “Starlight” (2006), “Uprising” (2009), “Resistance” (also 2009), and “Madness” (2012).
