Roots reggae is a subgenre of reggae music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The genre delves into the spiritual dimensions of Rastafari, black liberation, revolution, and the reverence for God, known as Jah in Rastafarianism. The genre addresses themes like spirituality, religion, the struggles of artists, poverty, black pride, social issues, and opposition to fascism, capitalism, corrupt government, and racial oppression. A recurrent motif in roots reggae is the theme of spiritual repatriation to Africa, reflecting a shared desire for a connection with ancestral roots. One of the pioneers of roots reggae is the band Inner Circle Reggae Band, who also gave us a very exclusive interview (read it here).

MUSICALITY

Roots reggae features a distinctive sound that combines traditional African music, elements of Rastafarian culture, and influences from earlier Jamaican music styles such as Jamaican jazz, ska, and rocksteady. The music typically incorporates a prominent bassline, syncopated guitar chords, and a steady drumbeat. One of the defining characteristics of roots reggae is its use of conscious and uplifting lyrics. The vocals often have a melodic and soulful quality, delivering messages of unity, spirituality, social justice, and the struggles of everyday life.

THEMES

Roots reggae is deeply rooted in Rastafarian philosophy and culture, which emphasizes spirituality, social consciousness, and the determination to overcome oppression. The lyrics in roots reggae often touch on themes of black pride, African heritage, liberation, and the pursuit of a better world. Songs address issues such as poverty, inequality, colonialism, and the longing for freedom.
