Thomas Anders was born in modest conditions in Koblenz, Germany, to become Europe's most recognized pop voice. Bernd Weidung, born in 1963, was musically gifted at a young age, having won singing competitions and having done hundreds of performances in his adolescence. His early attempts to become a big player in the German Schlager music market in the early 1980s failed but turned out differently when he befriended producer Dieter Bohlen in 1983.
They joined forces and formed Modern Talking and topped the charts with their 1984 release "You're My Heart, You're My Soul", number one in 35 nations. The Eurodisco-pop fusion by the duo dominated the world, setting the stage for a string of hits including "Cheri, Cheri Lady", "Brother Louie", and "Atlantis Is Calling". They were very popular in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, where they were the first Western artists to tour and record.
But at a cost. The band's initial incarnation was brought to a dramatic close in 1987, in part due to such tensions as bothered Anders' then-wife Nora. Anders attempted to launch a solo career during the hiatus but couldn't replicate past success, though he found some success in Latin America with his Spanish-language album "Barcos de Cristal".
Modern Talking's reunion in 1998 was a testament to the duo's timelessness as their reunion album "Back for Good" sold over three million copies in Europe alone. They updated their music to the '90s by incorporating modern dance trends and gaining a new generation of fans. Their reunion lasted until 2003 when there was again a dramatic breakup on stage in Rostock.
Anders has since gone on to have a successful solo career, particularly in Eastern Europe where he is a musical icon. He's been singled out for special honors, including the title of honorary professor of Ukraine's prestigious Taras Shevchenko National University and Russia's best-selling foreign artist. He has successfully returned to music composed in German in recent years, showing his versatility as an artist.
