Supertramp began in London in 1970, but until they formed their classic lineup in 1973, nothing much ever happened. This fantasy band - Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, Dougie Thomson, Bob Siebenberg, and John Helliwell - coexisted for a decade of marvelous years, recording some of the greatest songs in rock history.
Their greatest breakthrough came with 1974's "Crime of the Century" album, which went big on the charts and gave us the hit single "Dreamer." But 1979's "Breakfast in America" catapulted them to superstardom. Magic album - four gargantuan singles with "The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home," and "Goodbye Stranger" clogging up the radio stations of the world.
What was fascinating about Supertramp was the tension between Davies and Hodgson. They came from entirely different backgrounds - Davies was a working-class kid with blues and jazz influences, while Hodgson was privately educated with pop leanings. This tension in the creative partnership provided them with a unique sound that combined progressive rock sophistication and sing-along pop hooks.
Hodgson left the band in 1983 to focus his efforts on his own solo career and family. Davies remained with Supertramp, recording albums like "Brother Where You Bound" and "Free as a Bird," but they were never able to recapture their previous commercial success.
The band reunited and toured several times throughout the years, although Hodgson and Davies never reunited again after a one-off performance in 1993. They last performed in Madrid in 2012, and a 2015 tour that had been planned was aborted after Davies was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
To date, over 60 million Supertramp albums have been sold across the globe, with their greatest success in Canada, where they were twice diamond certified.
