Steve Hackett is a guitar player from the UK who became famous playing with the band Genesis. Steve played with them for six years and helped make six albums before starting his own career. He made his first solo album "Voyage of the Acolyte" while still in Genesis, and after leaving, he worked with another famous guitarist Steve Howe in a group called GTR. From rock music to classical, Steve has been very influential in the music scene. Famous and legendary guitar players like Eddie Van Halen and Brian May learned from his special way of playing guitar.
Steve Hackett was born in London and grew up with a brother John who also played music and helped write some Genesis songs. He first tried instruments like the harmonica, but fell in love with guitar when he was 12 years old and taught himself how to play without taking lessons. His music was shaped by both classical music and blues, and he liked many different artists from Bach to Jimi Hendrix. Steve Hackett started playing in small bands before joining Genesis after putting an ad in a music paper looking for creative musicians. He joined Genesis in the early 70s and created new ways of playing guitar that later influenced many famous guitarists. Though he helped write many songs, he sometimes felt he wasn't contributing enough and even offered to leave once. He finally left Genesis in 77 to work on his own music, after making his first solo album "Voyage of the Acolyte" while still in the band.
Even after leaving Genesis, the young rockstar played with his old bandmates a few times. In 82, they did a special show to help Peter Gabriel's music festival, and in 83, Gabriel and Mike Rutherford played at some of Hackett's concerts. The old Genesis members got together in 98 to help with a collection of their old songs, and Hackett helped make a new version of "The Carpet Crawlers". They almost got back together to perform a whole album in 2005, but it didn't happen. Genesis got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
In 75, Hackett made his first solo album "Voyage of the Acolyte" while still in Genesis, with help from his bandmates. After leaving Genesis, he made "Please Don't Touch!" in 78 and worked with different singers since he was too shy to sing himself. He then formed a band to play live shows and made successful albums like "Spectral Mornings" and "Defector". In the 80s, he tried new things with his music, making both rock and classical guitar albums. He joined a group called GTR with another famous guitarist Steve Howe. In the 90s, Steve Hackett started touring again after solving some legal problems that had kept him from playing in the United States. He made "Guitar Noir" in 93, which was very important to him because he felt he had been quiet for too long. He later made a blues album and then remade some old Genesis songs with other musicians for "Genesis Revisited". He also tried classical music again, working with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on "A Midsummer Night's Dream", which did well in the classical music charts.
In 2010, Hackett joined his old Genesis bandmates when they got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He then focused on playing old Genesis songs again with his project "Genesis Revisited", which was so popular he did several tours and made live albums at famous venues. He kept making his own albums too, like "Wolflight", "The Night Siren", and "At the Edge of Light", mixing rock music with sounds from around the world. More recently, he just released a new album in 2024 called "The Circus and the Nightwhale".
