Sam Hunt is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on December 8, 1984 in Cedartown, Georgia. Hunt was a promising football talent in high school. He also played for multiple colleges as a quarterback, but never fulfilled his potential as a football player. He earned a degree in philosophy and economics from University of Alabama at Birmingham, then tried out for the NFL team Kansas City Chiefs but they rejected him. During his college years, he also played the guitar, sang, and wrote songs, but he always looked at them as pastime activities, rather than a career. After his friends’ and family’s encouragement, he moved out to Nashville, Tennessee to try to make it in country music after he gave up on a football career.
This worked out very well for him. He started to write music for other artists, One of his compositions, “Come Over” sang by Kenny Chesney, won an ASCAP award. He also worked for other country stars, like Keith Urban, Billy Currington, or Reba McEntire. With his success as songwriter, Hunt released his debut single “Raised on It” in September 2013. It became a moderate success, reaching the #49 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
Sam Hunt’s debut album came out in October 2014, with the title “Montevallo”, through the label AMC Nashville. It became a massive hit, topping Billboard’s country music albums chart, while also peaking at the #3 spot on the famous overall Billboard 200 chart. It ended up selling 1.292 million copies in the United States. In 2015, he went on his first nationwide Sam Hunt concert tour, called “Lipstick Graffiti”. The latest new Sam Hunt album, “Southside” from April 2020, sold around 1 million copies, and peaked at the #5 spot on Billboard 200.
