Opeth Biography

Formed in Stockholm, Sweden, Opeth is a legendary progressive metal band founded in the early 90s, and considered to be one of the most innovative and creative bands of the metal genre, mixing elements of blues, jazz, and death metal all together. The band is also known for their acoustic passages. Throughout their success, the band went through many lineup changes with Mikael Åkerfeldt leading since 1992. The band is also known for touring globally very often and as of 2024, they have released 13 albums and sold over 1.5 million albums, and their fourteenth studio album, "The Last Will and Testament," is to be released.

The band started as a death metal band, founded and envisioned by David Isberg. Isberg invited Mikael Åkerfeldt to join as a bassist, leading to a lineup change when other members left. Isberg and Åkerfeldt recruited new members but faced more changes as members left due to slow progress.

The metal band's first album came in 94, named "Orchid," but was only released to the public by 95 due to some distribution problems. The album's main genre was death metal, but at that time, the band already decided to implement creative elements like acoustic guitars and clean vocals. Something very rare to see in extreme metal bands from the early 90s.

After touring in the UK, "Morningrise," Opeth's second album was released and led to one more tour in Europe with Cradle of Filth. By 99, after some changes with record labels, the album "Still Life" came out. The album came as a concept album about a character returning to his hometown after being banished for his beliefs.

After touring for "Blackwater Park," Opeth returned to Sweden to work on new projects. Mikael Åkerfeldt struggled to balance heavy and mellow parts, leading Jonas Renkse of Katatonia to suggest creating two separate albums. Åkerfeldt embraced the idea, convincing his bandmates and record label by downplaying the complexity and cost.

By 2010, Opeth had released ten albums and was already working on some new stuff. One year later, keyboardist Per Wiberg left the band by mutual decision.

In 2014, Opeth released their eleventh studio album called "Pale Communion." Despite concerns about dividing their fanbase with their evolving sound, Åkerfeldt described the album as "a little bit heavier" than "Heritage," with hard rock and heavy metal influences. By 2021, Martin Axenrot, the band's drummer, left the band.

A very curious and fun fact is that the band's name, Opeth, comes from the novel "The Sunbird," where Opeth is a fictional city.
