NOFX Biography

NOFX was formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by vocalist/bassist Fat Mike, guitarist Eric Melvin, and drummer Erik Sandin. The punk rock band that could not get airborne would turn out to be one of independent music's success stories, with over eight million records sold without ever signing a major-label record deal.

The group truly came together in the early 1990s when they added El Hefe as lead guitarist and trumpeter to complete them to a traditional lineup. Their most commercially successful onslaught was in 1994 with "Punk in Drublic", which went gold and solidified their place among the top punk rock groups. Even during the '90s mainstream punk explosion, NOFX went as far as to avoid MTV and the major labels, remaining independent on Fat Mike's own label, Fat Wreck Chords.

NOFX gained fame for their technical expertise, satirical song texts, and political activism during their career. Their 18-minute epic track "The Decline" (1999) confirmed their musical maturity, and releases like "The War on Errorism" (2003) confirmed their political activism. NOFX released numerous records prolifically with fifteen studio albums and some EPs within their four-decade lifespan.

Aside from their music, NOFX reached sensation status through side activities like their reality television series "Backstage Passport" and Fat Mike's creation of the pioneering Fat Wreck Chords label. After 41 years of career actions in comparison with those of the record industry, the band concluded with closing shows in October of 2024 in San Pedro, California, as the most experimental and highly independent punk rock band in history.
