Christopher Comstock, better known by his stage name Marshmello, is an American music producer and DJ. He was born on May 19, 1992 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Not much is known about his personal past before making it big as an EDM DJ. Since he wears his signature marshmallow mask at live Marshemello concert shows and in his music videos, even the fact that his real name is Christopher Comstock was hidden for a long time. However, in 2017, online “detectives” found out, and it was then confirmed by Forbes Magazine. We now know that he’s the same person as the DJ who used the alias “Dotcom”.
He started uploading his self-produced remixes of popular songs to the audio sharing site SoundCloud in 2015 under his original alias “Dotcom”. His remix of Chief Keef’s 2013 hip hop track "Hate Bein' Sober" went viral. While getting considerable success as Dotcom, he also started anonymously uploading original music under a new alias on SoundCloud, the now well-known “Marshmello”. His first original electronic track was titled “Wazes”. He also kept doing remixes on the new account as well. After a while, he got noticed by world-famous dubstep DJ Skrillex, who shared some of his songs on social media. This led to Comstock getting to do a whole slew of live Marshmello concert shows in high-profile clubs across the US.
His debut album came out in January 2016, with the title “Joytime” and through his own label Joytime Collective. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #5 spot on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, but failing to break into the famous Billboard 200. However, his second EDM record, “Joytime II” from June 2018, managed to do so, peaking at the #165 spot, while also topping the EDM chart.
Since then, the masked DJ from Philadelphia has released two more studio albums, thus he has 4 in total. The latest new Marshmello album came out in June 2021, with the title “Shockwave”. The biggest hits in the Marshmello setlist to date are "Alone" (2016), “Wolves” (2017) featuring Selena Gomez, “Friends” (2018) featuring Anne-Marie, and "Happier" (also 2018) featuring Bastille.
