Born and bred in the tiny town of Battle in East Sussex, Keane's story began in 1995 when a few schoolboy friends came together to make music. Later, combining with Richard Hughes and original guitarist Dominic Scott, schoolmates Tom Chaplin and Tim Rice-Oxley founded what would become one of Britain's most distinctive rock bands.
What was different from the outset with Keane was a very unusual approach, eschewing guitars as most rock bands do, instead centering their sound on Rice-Oxley's piano work. This wasn't how things had initially been conceptualized: when Scott left the band in 2001, instead of finding a replacement, what could have proved a setback actually became their distinctive style.
It came with the album "Hopes and Fears" in 2004, after many years of playing the pub circuit in London and single independent singles, the album went straight to number one in the UK and won the 2005 Brit Award for Best British Album.
Keane enjoyed international success with their singles "Somewhere Only We Know" and "Everybody's Changing," showcasing their gift for emotional piano rock. The band continued with "Under the Iron Sea" and "Perfect Symmetry," though their lead vocalist, Tom Chaplin, had issues to deal with and went to rehab in 2006 for his addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Four successful albums later, including the 2012 "Strangeland" album and a compilation of greatest hits in 2013, they went on protracted hiatus. The members spent time working solo while Chaplin released two solo albums and Rice-Oxley worked on his songwriting; they returned with "Cause and Effect" in 2019, an album born from events in Rice-Oxley's life during this time apart.
Two decades after that split, Keane announced plans to celebrate "Hopes and Fears" with an anniversary tour in 2024. How the band went from school friends to one of Britain's most successful bands-13 million-plus records sold globally-reveals the rewards of sticking to your unique sound, even when it means bucking tradition.
