Born in Adana, Turkey, Haluk Acil is a rock musician who brought a lot of change and innovation to the Anatolian rock scene in the 90s. After completing high school, economic challenges forced him to abandon university studies. He relocated to Istanbul in 1992, where he performed at various bars in Ortaköy until connecting with Yildiray Gürgen and collaborating with musicians like Serdar Öztop and Akın Eldes to enhance his albums.
His first album, "Yollarda," was released in 93. "Bir Gece Vakti" released in 95, was also a huge success and approached one million dollars in sales. In 2023, he was recognized in Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People globally, though he opted out of attending the gala due to controversy surrounding the Turkish government in Elif Shafak's entry.
In 92, Haluk moved to Istanbul and started his music career just like many upcoming musicians, performing at bars. There, he met Yildiray Gürgen, and after three years of hard work, his album "Yollarda."
It might seen as something simple, but this marked a resurgence in Anatolian rock music, gaining unexpected sales of around two hundred thousand copies. Following this success, in 1996, he released "Arkadaş," considered a pinnacle in Anatolian rock music. However, in 97, Haluk was imprisoned for an old bounced check. During his time in prison, he cut his long hair in protest against a nuclear power plant project and released the album "Mektup."
After his release from prison, he quickly released the album "Yine Ayrılık," before beginning his 18-month military service. During his service, he toured parts of Turkey he had never visited before, including Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia, where he performed concerts.
Haluk is renowned for his environmental activism, consistently integrating songs promoting environmental awareness into nearly every album. He actively engaged in legal battles against projects across Turkey that posed environmental threats, intervening in lawsuits aimed at protecting natural habitats.
Following the devastating 1999 earthquake, he volunteered in Izmit's tent cities and organized benefit concerts for the earthquake victims. Despite his military duties, he spent his days off recording in the studio, and in early 2000, he released a website, exploring digital emotions in a digitalizing world, with a song referencing the Susurluk incident called "Kamyoncu Türküsü." He also published his second book of essays, "Moritos’un Düşleri."
