플로 라이다 Flo Rida Biography

Tramar Lacel Dillard, better known by his stage name Flo Rida, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He was born on September 16, 1979 in Miami Gardens, Florida. Dillard grew up with 7 sisters, some of whom sang in a gospel choir. Meanwhile, his brother-in-law worked as a hype man for the local hip hop group The 2 Live Crew”, which gave him an early insight into the world of hip hop. While still in high school, he joined the amateur rap group “GroundHoggz” with three of his neighbors. They started recording songs in underground studios. Alas, tragedy also struck Dillard in his youth: he lost one of his sisters to bronchitis.

His first gig in the music world was being a hype man for one of the members of 2 Live Crew, Fresh Kid Ice. The rapper also featured Dillard’s group GroundHoggz on his 2004 album “Freaky Chinese”.

Despite his early steps in the music industry, Dillard couldn’t make a living through music after high school, so he went to college. He studied business administration in two colleges, but dropped out of both of them. Instead, he went back to his home state of Florida to take another crack at a career as a rapper.

This time, it worked. He got signed by the indie label Poe Boy Entertainment. In March 2008, they released his debut album, “Mail on Sunday”, under his new stage name “Flo Rida”. It became a massive success, peaking at the #4 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Its standout single, “Low” featuring T-Pain, reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and was also featured on the soundtrack of the 2008 blockbuster dance drama film “Step Up 2: The Streets”.

Since then, Flo Rida has released 3 more studio albums, thus he has 4 in total. The best selling one among them remained his debut record, “Mail on Sunday”, with around 500,000 copies sold worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Flo Rida album came out back in July 2012, with the title “Wild Ones”. Also in 2012, a short Flo Rida concert was performed at the finale of the American reality-talent show American Idol.

Flo Rida’s biggest hits to date are “Right Round” (2009) featuring Kesha, “Club Can’t Handle Me” (2010), “Wild Ones” (2011) featuring Sia, “Good Feeling” (also 2011), and “Whistle” (2012). In 2021, he competed in the Eurovision song contest, representing the microstate of San Marino. Check where the next Flo Rida concert is playing on the page above.
