The Lumineers is an American folk rock band. They were founded in 2005 in New York City, New York. The founding members were vocalist and guitarist Wesley Schultz (born in 1982 in Ramsey, New Jersey) and drummer and keyboardist Jeremiah Fraites (1986, Ramsey, New Jersey).
Schultz and Fraites started performing together in the early 2000’s in New York City. The earliest versions of a The Lumineers concert was the two of them performing under the name “Free Beer”, singing cover songs in local bars. At first, it was nothing but a fun pastime to them, then they started working on original material. During a gig in Jersey City, the emcee mistakenly introduced them as “The Lumineers”, confusing them with the band “Lumineers” that was supposed to play the same venue a week later. However, Schultz and Fraites liked the sound of that name and stuck with it.
After struggling to make a living through music in New York, the duo relocated to Denver, Colorado for better luck. There, in 2008, they started playing with a drummer named Jason "Jay" Van Dyke. While he stayed with the group for less than a year, he later sued the band after they found success for supposedly not giving him enough credit.
In 2010, the band was joined by cellist Neyla Pekarek who found them through a Craigslist ad. The next year, they got signed by the Seattle-based record label Onto Entertainment.
In April 2012, they released their self-titled debut album “The Lumineers”. At that point, the band consisted of the founders, Schultz as a vocalist-guitarist and Fraites as a vocalist-drummer, as well as cellist Pekarek, keyboardist Stelth Ulvang, and bassist Ben Wahamaki. The album was a massive hit, peaking at the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 list.
Since then, the Denver-basedfolk rock band has released 3 more studio albums, thus they have 4 in total. The best selling has remained their self-titled debut project, having sold 1.75 million copies in the US alone. Meanwhile, their latest new The Lumineers album is titled “Brightside”, which came out in January 2022.
The biggest hits by The Lumineers to date are “Ho Hey” (2012), “Stubborn Love” (also 2012), “Ophelia” (2016), and “Sleep on the Floor” (also 2016).
Both founders are still members of the band. Cellist Pekarek left the group in 2018. The rest of their current line-up is made up of keyboardist Ulvang, bassist Byron Isaacs, guitarist Brandon Miller, and violinist Lauren Jacobson.
