Consider how wonderful a landmark it is for an Eastern European metal group to have this much of an impact everywhere across the world. Behemoth was recording demos in Poland initially when the nation was still learning how to evolve from the aftermath of the Soviets. Metal was not exactly mainstream entertainment back then! Interesting, nonetheless, is how far their sound has evolved.
Their early albums like "Sventevith" and "Grom" were full-on black metal, with that cold-sounding, icy-sounding sound on the guitars black metal is renowned for. However, they were never happy to stick in the same groove. When they released "Satanica" in 1999, they were combining death metal technicality with atmospherics of black metal.
They do it live, too. We're talking ornate costumes, makeup, thespian-performances in a manner even more reminiscent of dark religious ritual than concerts. Nergal especially made iconic the idea of being as intense live as their music was. They also wrote lyrically too. Where extreme metal usually stays within mundane dark topical themes, Behemoth engages more challenging subject matter such as mystical ancient gnosis, philosophy, and religious polemics.
Nergal frequently works with Polish writer Krzysztof Azarewicz to pen lyrics that are darker verse than most metal songs.
The band has weathered pretty crazed issues considering they've only been around for so long. Aside from Nergal's fight with leukemia, they were banned in Russia and the majority of Poland. Protesters turned up at shows, and there have even been some of their merchandise confiscated by authorities. They never stopped striving to push further with their creative purpose, though, but just kept moving on.
They weren't just getting by in 2024 but were rather one of the most highly regarded metal bands out there. They've headlined premier festivals across the world and have inspired dozens of bands. Not too shabby for a group that started rehearsing raw black metal in Poland's underground scene.
Behemoth are set to make North America far more evil on their Godless IV Tour with Deicide, and others.
Nergal says Behemoth's The Shit Ov God is more philosophical than you think: "It's not a stupid title."
