Amorphis Biography
Amorphis are a Finnish progressive metal band formed in Helsinki in 1990 by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari, and Esa Holopainen. What started as a straightforward death metal act has grown over three decades into something harder to pin down, a mix of progressive metal, folk metal, and melodic death metal, built around lyrics drawn from the Kalevala, Finland's national epic.
The band's early years were shaped by lineup shuffles and stylistic leaps. Their 1994 album Tales from the Thousand Lakes is still considered the record that defined their sound.
Vocalist Pasi Koskinen carried the band through the late '90s and early 2000s, singing on albums like Elegy and Tuonela, before leaving in 2004. After sifting through over a hundred audition tapes, the band found their long-term frontman in Tomi Joutsen, whose first record with them, Eclipse (2006), marked a real turning point.
From there, the band settled into a steady rhythm of acclaimed releases, including Skyforger (2009), Circle — which won Metal Hammer's Album of the Year in 2013 — and Under the Red Cloud (2015), which they toured alongside fellow Finnish acts Nightwish and Arch Enemy. More recently, Halo (2022) marked the band's 30th anniversary, and their 2025 album Borderland landed on several best-of-the-year lists.
