Famous for their unique punk rock and gothic style, AFI is a band formed in Ukiah, USA in 91. AFI transitioned from hardcore punk to various genres like horror punk, and post-hardcore, while they also released eleven studio albums and notable success with "Sing the Sorrow" in 2003, featuring hits like "Girl's Not Grey" and "Silver and Cold," AFI achieved commercial acclaim and Platinum certification for the album.
In 1991, Davey Havok founded AFI in high school with Mark Stopholese and Vic Chalker, despite having no musical experience initially. Drummer Adam Carson joined at Mark's very smart suggestion, while Geoff Kresge replaced Chalker on bass.
After playing early shows and recording their first EP "Dork" in 93, the band briefly disbanded that same year when members went to different colleges. Fortunately, the band regrouped after a reunion concert.
AFI released their debut album "Answer That and Stay Fashionable" in 95. The album brought a very fast hardcore-styled track with humorous lyrics in songs like "Cereal Wars." During this period, they introduced the term 'East Bay hardcore' to define their style.
99 was a very important year for the band, that's because with the release of "Black Sails in the Sunset," AFI brought a more dark romantic style to the band. This transformation was praised by many music critics, recognizing Davey Havok's evolution as a significant singer-songwriter.
After leaving the record label they were signed and joined a new one, the band released "Sing the Sorrow" in 2003, which was very successful. The album debuted in top 10 on Billboard and received glowing reviews from major music publications. Tracks like "Girl's Not Grey", "The Leaving Song Pt. II", and "Silver and Cold" achieved success on the Billboard charts, broadening AFI's audience. The band earned their first MTV Video Music Award nomination in 2003 for "Girl's Not Grey", winning in the MTV2 category.
In 2021, AFI released "Twisted Tongues" and "Escape from Los Angeles". The album titled "Bodies" was announced in February with a release date of June 11, accompanied by two new songs "Looking Tragic / Begging for Trouble."
In a special event in 2023, AFI performed "Sing the Sorrow" in its entirety for the first and final time to commemorate the album's 20th anniversary, with support acts including Jawbreaker, Chelsea Wolfe, and Choir Boy.
