The three teenage boys went to the same high school in Riverstone, New South Wales, Australia. They decided to form a band and started uploading videos of themselves performing cover songs to YouTube in 2011. They were soon joined by drummer Ashton Irwin. By the end of the year, they got their first live 5 Seconds of Summer concert gig at Annandale Hotel in Sydney, playing for a “crowd” of 12 people.
Soon thereafter, the new Aussie band went on the meteoric rise of their dreams. While still in high school, they got signed by Sony/ATV Music Publishing. This resulted in all three founding members eventually dropping out of high school. Instead, they got mentorship from seasoned Australian musicians Christian Lo Russo and Joel Chapman, from the former pop rock band Amy Meredith. 5 Seconds of Summer released two early EP’s (Extended Plays), both of which became massively successful with very little push from their label.
They also got discovered by the world-famous British boyband One Direction. One Direction memberLouis Tomlinson tweeted about 5SOS early into their career. The Aussie boyband even performed 5 Seconds of Summer concert shows opening for One Direction on their 2013 “Take Me Home” tour, which greatly helped the fresh their popularity worldwide. It was later revealed that One Direction members also bought a collective 20% stake in 5SOS’s LLC company.
This all led to 5SOS releasing their highly anticipated debut album, the self-titled “5 Seconds of Summer” in June 2014. It lived up to the hype, reaching the #1 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list in the US. The most popular track on its listing is “She Looks So Perfect”.
Since then, the Aussie pop-rock band has put out 4 more full studio albums, thus they have 5 in total. The best selling among them has remained their self-titled debut album with over 1.2 million copies sold. Meanwhile, the latest new 5 Seconds of Summer album is “5SOS5”, which came out in September 2022.
5 Seconds of Summer still consists of their line-up of original founders, joined by drummer Irwin. Their biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “She Looks So Perfect” (2014), “Amnesia” (also 2014), “Young Blood” (2018), and “Teeth” (2020).
5 Seconds Of Summer does not have any upcoming tour dates.
