Tame Impala is an Australian psychedelic pop-rock musical project. It was started in 2007 in Perth, Australia. The sole founding member is vocalist, guitarist, bassist, drummer and keyboardist Kevin Parker (born in 1986 in Sydney, Australia).
Parker was a professional musician playing for multiple bands in Perth in the mid-2000’s, one of which being the rock duo "Dee Dee Dums" in which he played the guitar. He started the project “Tame Impala” in his home studio alone and started to upload its music to the late social media site MySpace. Within a year, he was signed by the Australian indie label Modular Recordings.
In September 2008, he released the self-titled EP “Tame Impala”, which reached the #1 spot on the Australian independent records’ chart. He also started touring live. Since Parker can’t play all the instruments at once at a Tame Impala concert, he recruited drummer Jay Watson and bassist Dominic Simper to tour with him.
Tame Impala’s debut album came out in May 2010, entitled “Innerspeaker”. It became a hit, peaking at the #4 spot on the ARIA chart in Australia. Their next release, however, topped even the debut record's success, making a splash internationally. “Lonerism” from October 2012 reached the #34 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US and the #14 spot on the OCC chart in the UK.
Since then, Tame Impala has released two more studio albums, thus they have four in total. The best selling among them so far has been their third one, “Currents” from July 2015, which sold around 1.3 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Tame Impala album is titled “The Slow Rush”, which came out in February 2020.
Tame Impala’s biggest hits to date are “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” (2012), “Mind Mischief” (also 2012), “The Less I Know The Better” (2015), and “Let It Happen” (also 2015). Kevin Parker still does all the vocals and plays all the instruments on the recordings of the songs, while he performs those songs live with other musicians when he plays at a Tame Impala concert.
