Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine is a French pop-rock singer and songwriter, born in Dole, in the Jura region of France. He has been in the music business since the late 1960s and has been recording since 1978.
What makes the journey of Thiéfaine so interesting is the fact that he achieved all of this without the aid of mainstream television and radio. His constant touring ensured he gained a loyal fan base, which was enough to pack the 17,000-seat Palais omnisports de Paris-Bercy for his anniversary show in 1998.
In 2002, a tribute album of covers was released, which proved the staying power of Thiéfaine in the minds of the younger generation of French musicians.
Musically, he’s a classic rocker, but his true trademark is his lyrics. They are instantly identifiable: dense, stream-of-consciousness style, surreal and dark imagery, humor, cynicism, literary allusions, and unapologetic use of new words and foreign words.
His Catholic boarding school education also manifests itself in biblical allusions and winking irreverence. The song titles are also tongue-in-cheek excess, some of them ridiculously long as a form of artistic statement.
His influences are a veritable hall of fame of international artists, from Léo Ferré and Lou Reed to Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, and a wide range of French, English, and German writers and poets, including a special fondness for Romantic literature.
Over his career, Thiéfaine released more than a dozen studio albums, several acclaimed live records, and a handful of compilations, and remains one of France's most singular and enduring cult figures in rock music.
