Slipknot's New Drummer: A Timeline of Eloy Casagrande's Journey to Slipknot

If you’ve been into metal, you probably have been getting bombarded by news of Jay Weinberg being "kicked out" of Slipknot and the mystery of who’s gonna take the seat of Mr. Weinberg. We even talked about this in this article. Well, something we all can agree on is that whoever gets that seat will always be put into comparison with Joey Jordison, just like it was done to Weinberg.

Recapping What Happened

Let’s understand better what happened:

November 5th, 2023

Slipknot announced that they had parted ways with drummer Jay Weinberg (understand more here). The band stated they had "decided to make a creative decision and to part ways with Jay" with no further explanation. It was a shock for everyone, including Weinberg. And, of course, what everyone could only think about was who was going to assume that role.

February 6th, 2024

Fast forward three months, something curious happened. Eloy Casagrande, now the former drummer for Sepultura, announced that he was leaving the band. Not only were Sepultura fans shocked by the announcement, but Sepultura band members were also taken aback.

Mr. Casagrande informed the band that he was departing Sepultura to pursue a career in another project. The band was taken by surprise; without prior warning, he immediately left the band, abandoning everything related to Sepultura.

Andreas Kisser, the band’s guitarist, didn’t seem to like the idea of Eloy leaving the band, especially because Sepultura is about to call it quits and make a farewell tour for 2024/2025.

Even so, Andreas praised Eloy. “We already knew that Eloy is a phenomenal musician, probably the best drummer around in the scene. He's a guy that, really, when you see veteran drummers, they are impressed to see him play. He has truly fantastic technique," stated the guitarist.

The same month Eloy quit Sepultura, the young and very talented drummer Greyson Nekrutman, who was playing for Suicidal Tendencies, announced that he was leaving the band to join Sepultura, replacing Eloy.

For Sepultura, this was obviously great; Greyson is an amazing drummer, talented enough to learn all Sepultura songs quickly and resume touring.

March 5th, 2024

Jay Weinberg took to Instagram to announce he would be replacing Greyson in Suicidal Tendencies.

There Was Still One Mystery To Solve

With everything that happened, there was still one very important question left to be answered: Who was going to play drums for Slipknot?

And this was the time that Eloy’s name came up.

He’s talented, has a lot of experience touring, and hands down is up to Slipknot’s level.

But of course, everything was just pure speculation based on how these drummers suddenly left the bands.

The broken ProMark stick 

March 11th, 2024

While Weinberg was already touring with Suicidal Tendencies, and Greyson was kicking ass with Sepultura, Slipknot's puzzle remained unsolved.

But on March 11th, something came up. Slipknot took to Instagram and uploaded a photo of a broken drumstick with the caption "Rehearsal."

The photo showed a broken ProMark stick lying on the studio floor. ProMark is, of course, one of the largest and longest-running drumstick manufacturers — indeed, late Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison had a signature stick with the brand — and Eloy Casagrande is also a key profiled artist on the ProMark roster.

But once again, this was no confirmation that Slipknot’s new guy was Eloy. Though some progress was made, at least Slipknot’s fans now knew that the band was looking for a new drummer, or maybe they even already had a name.

Leaked Files and the deleted Reddit Discussion

April 22th, 2024

After two long months of pure speculation and Slipknot fans starting to get angry with all the mystery, something once again came up.

Slipknot released a promo for their comeback on their website, a simple animation showing each member’s masks.

But some very curious fans found out something that the band might have leaked (on purpose, probably). The thing was that in the source code of the animation that displayed each member’s mask, contained each member's name in jpg format.

So there was, corey.jpg, clown.jpg, and….. eloy.jpg.

The fans created a discussion on Reddit (which was quickly deleted by the platform) and shared the information with everyone.

"If you open the video with Mozilla and open the source code, you can see the information given when creating the video," explains one of the participants in the discussion. "We can see who's who in the images," he says, then proceeds to point out the lines of code where "eloy.jpg" appears in reference to one of the photos.

One more piece of the puzzle was solved; now, the chances that Eloy was the guy were almost 100%.

Eloy's Wife Post  

April 24th, 2024

Eloy’s wife took to Instagram to post a picture with the caption "very special trip." The post was made one day before Slipknot’s concert with the new drummer.

Concert Day 

April 25th, 2024

This was the night Slipknot had a surprise show. It was their first show of 2024 and with the new drummer, supposedly Eloy.

In accordance with Taylor's promise, the majority of the songs performed during the show were selected from their 1999 self-titled album. Additionally, they included tracks from various points in their musical history, excluding any from their latest album released in 2022, "The End, So Far."

The concert took place in a small pub/club called Pappy + Harriet, in Pioneertown, California. There were only 350 people there.

Now the thing was, Slipknot did the show, awesome, but there wasn't any official announcement from the band saying that Eloy was the new drummer, even though everything indicates he was the new drummer.

The BABYMETAL Picture 

April 29th, 2024

Three days after Slipknot’s surprise concert, the Japanese metal band BABYMETAL posted a picture together with the boys from Slipknot. In that picture, it was possible to see more clearly who the drummer was. And of course, internet researchers made comparisons, and according to them, the guy is Eloy.

In that same picture BABYMETAL took with Slipknot and in some other pictures about the April 25th Slipknot concert, it became easier to identify details that indicate the new drummer was Eloy, such as 1) The arrows tattoo Eloy has on his arm; and 2) Eloy's favorite adidas NMD shoes.

The Official Announcement

April 30th, 2024

Ladies and gentlemen, as we've expected, Eloy is the guy. After almost four months of speculation and pure mystery, Slipknot finally took to Instagram and announced Eloy as the new drummer in a post with the caption "Slipknot officially welcomes Eloy Casagrande," breaking the band's tradition of never announcing new members. And the mystery is over;

Eloy indeed is the new drummer.
