Brian Hugh Warner, better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American singer, songwriter, actor, and painter. He was born on January 5, 1969 in Canton, Ohio. Warner went to religious schools growing up. One of his teachers showed the students hard rock and heavy metal music as examples of what music to avoid, but it ended up having the opposite effect on the young Brian: he fell in love with the music. After high school, he attended Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, working on a degree in journalism. While doing so, he wrote for the music magazine "25th Parallel".

Having emerged himself in the Florida music scene that way, he founded the metal band “Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids” in 1989, along with guitarist Scott Putesky. He adopted the stage name “Marilyn Manson”, combining the names of 1950’s movie star Marilyn Monroe and 1960’s serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson. They recorded their first demo tape in 1990. In the meantime, they built up a sizeable local following in Florida. The Marilyn Manson concert shows became known for their crazy antics early on, such as naked women tied to crucifixes, children locked in cages, and butchered animal remains being present on stage. While Sony Records originally signed the new band in 1991, they ultimately dropped them before recording any music. The reason is obvious - their unorthodox gimmicks.

So, the band ended up releasing their debut album in July 1994 through the vanity label Nothing Records. By that time, their name was shortened to “Marilyn Manson”, so it denotes both their lead singer and the band itself. The debut album was titled “Portrait of an American Family”, which ended up peaking at the #35 spot on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart. They also got to go on a nationwide Marilyn Manson concert tour promoting the record. Their second album, “Antichrist Superstar” from October 1996, became a much bigger success, although it also understandably angered many Christians in the country. But it ultimately peaked at the #3 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart.

Evidently, his subversive music has caused Manson plenty of controversy throughout his career. He was even blamed by some for influencing the two shooters at Columbine High School in 1999. But through all that, his music remained popular. He put out a total of 11 studio albums over the years. The best selling one among them is the aforementioned “Antichrist Superstar” from October 1996, which ended up selling around 7 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Marilyn Manson album came out in September 2020, with the title “We Are Chaos”. Manson also picked up painting in 1999, and opened the very first exhibit of his own in 2002, titled “The Golden Age of Grotesque”.

As an actor, he appeared in such films as “Resident Evil” (2002), and “The New Mutants” (2020), as well as the TV show “Salem” (2016). His biggest hits to date are “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” (1995), “The Beautiful People” (1996), “The Dope Show’ (1998), and “This Is the New Shit” (2003).
