Trendy Artists of the Week: Kendrick Lamar, Ozuna, The Weeknd, Sefo, and Kygo

In this article, let’s take a look at some recent news about some of the most popular artists on our site.

TDE President Reflects on Kendrick Lamar Departure

Hip hop superstar Kendrick Lamar released his debut album “Section.80” with Top Dawg Entertainment back in July 2011. The label and the artist produced 4 more studio albums together since, most notably his breakout project “To Pimp a Butterfly” from 2017. However, with the May 2022 release of “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”, that collaboration is over. From this point onward, Lamar’s projects will be produced by his own company, pgLang. He co-founded the creative collective with Dave Free in March 2020.

As for Top Dawg Entertainment, losing a top talent is evidently a hard thing to go through. However, it’s not all doom and gloom for them. TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson Jr. had this to say about the label’s near future to Complex:

“This is really just a natural progression. But as human beings, we are scared of change because change represents the unknown.”

About his time working with Lamar, he was speaking while seemingly oozing with pride and joy:

“We did it. We reached a certain level that nobody reached. He got the Pulitzer for his album. That was the first of contemporary music. We did all the awards, we touched all the people, we did all the community stuff. We had the hit records. We had the underground classics. That’s it. Job well done.”

TDE’s top artists now are SZA, Schoolboy Q, and Isaiah Rashad.

Two Big Shows In Ibiza for Ozuna

Puerto Rican rapper-singer Ozuna was recently in Ibiza, Spain, prepping for his set of live performances. His two concerts took place on July 24th and July 31st, at the high-end night club Ushuaïa Ibiza. The other headliner on the marquee was DJ Snake from France. The two have put out two hit songs together: “Taki Taki” in 2018 and “SG” in 2021.

HBO Releases Teaser Trailer for The Weeknd’s “Idol” Series

Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name “The Weeknd”, has been showing off his acting chops lately.

Previously, he’s appeared in the 2019 Netflix movie “Uncut Gems”. Now, he’s starring in the upcoming HBO romantic drama series “The Idol”. He recently shared the freshly released teaser trailer on his social media - watch it below.

Sefo Removed From Stage by Governor

Sefo

Back in June, Turkish rapper Sefo and his audience had to live through quite an infuriating incident.

He was performing in Bodrum, Turkey when he was suddenly removed from the stage by officials on order from the district governor’s office. The issue: Turkey still has a coronavirus restriction in place which dictates that all music events have to end by 1:00 AM. The only problem is that Sefo was forced to end his show at 0:30 AM… Evidently, the furious musician took to his social media to rant about the injustice.

Thankfully, his two later shows at the end of July had no such issue.
