The Stain the Canvas Interview: The Gloomy Tapes Tour, Barren Gates and Projects for 2025
From mixing metal and electronic music in projects, to touring Europe, our chat today is with the Italian metal band Stain the Canvas.
Stain the Canvas is shaking up the metal scene, and I've got to tell you - these guys are something special. While most bands play it safe, they're out there mixing heavy riffs with electronic beats and teaming up with artists you'd never expect in metal. Just check out their latest single 'Limbo' with electronic wizard Barren Gates - it's a perfect example of how they love to push the envelope. Right now, they've just finished their 'The Gloomy Tapes' tour, leaving impressed crowds everywhere in Europe.
Here's the real kicker - they're cooking up something even bigger. While they're crushing it on tour, they've been secretly crafting their third album (STC III), and from the whispers I'm hearing, they're about to take their sound to a whole new level. Their track 'Dead Circus' from 'All Fine / eniF llA' already has fans and critics buzzing, but they're not stopping there.
These guys dream big - we're talking main stage at Rock Am Ring and conquering the US tour circuit. They've already jammed with heavy hitters like The Word Alive and Get Scared, but they're hungry for more.
Well, enough said! Let's get to work.
The Gloomy Tapes Europe Tour
CONCERTY: So, first of all, thanks a lot for taking some time to talk to us. I know you guys have been really busy the past couple of months, and as we do this interview right now, you just finished the ‘The Gloomy Tapes Europe Tour’. So, how was everything?
STAIN THE CANVAS: The tour was amazing, we played in Amsterdam, London, Manchester and Rostock and the crowd was dope in all the venues. Plus the guys in CMK and Jady are super cool people.
CONCERTY: And talking about being busy, I know you've worked on many projects in 2024, and you just released your latest single ‘Limbo’ with the electronic music artist Barren Gates, which, by the way, is an extremely well-produced song. Congratulations! So, how has 2024 been for you guys? Was it as you expected?
STAIN THE CANVAS: It was a pretty silent year but as you said we’ve been pretty busy writing new stuff for STC III - and we still are, actually. We played some festivals and now we’re on tour with Call Me Karizma, I’d say this year has been nice. Of course, the more we have chances to play, the better. So hopefully we’ll play more in 2025/2026.
Limbo with Barren Gates
CONCERTY: I just mentioned your latest release ‘Limbo’, and I believe you guys are bringing something to the table that many bands are unfortunately afraid of, which is innovation! We can see that you guys like innovation and are not afraid of adding this element to your songs. How did the idea of working with Barren Gates started?
STAIN THE CANVAS: It’s Barren who actually got in touch with us. He said he’s been a fan since our 2nd single “Anima”. We liked his production and decided to make a song together, it turned out interesting. I’m glad you noticed we’re trying to bring new stuff on the table, and you’ll definitely hear this more in STC III. We’re not afraid to experiment as long as our style becomes recognizable.
Influences
CONCERTY: I know you guys are probably tired of answering questions about your influences and the bands that led you to enjoy metal, so we won’t get into that. But I’m really curious to know, with all the bands out there, what would be one band or artist that you would love to do a song with? Explain why.
STAIN THE CANVAS: There are many artists we’d like to collab with, and they’re all different - that’s because we like to vary our sound a lot. For example, we’d love to collaborate with Ghostemane just as Bludnymph, and Salmo (very big Italian rapper) etc.
CONCERTY: I was listening to ‘All Fine / eniF llA’ and the album is just fantastic. But one song caught my attention and I just couldn’t stop listening to it. ‘Dead Circus’ is one of the best songs I’ve listened to in the past couple of months, and it got me even more excited to talk to you guys. So, what was the process of creating this masterpiece? Was it something you brainstormed in a few days or did it take more time? Walk us through the process of creating ‘Dead Circus’, please.
STAIN THE CANVAS: I’m glad you like that song cause it’s my favorite as well! I would say it was not instant to get to the final version of it, but it wasn’t super long either. Both verses and chorus came pretty fluid in my mind while I was writing it. I spent some more time on the actual sounds/production instead of the song structure itself. The idea was to have a very dark pop/deathcore song and so I did haha
Quick Chat
CONCERTY: As we approach the end of our chat, we’d like to ask some questions that we ask all the bands we talk to. You’ve talked about the band that you would love to make a song with, but now I would like if you could name one band or artist that you would love to perform live with.
STAIN THE CANVAS: Honestly we’d love to perform live with the artists who already collaborated in our songs, such as The Word Alive, Get Scared, Outline in Color, Famous Last Words. I know it’s gonna be fire because we already performed with Call Me Karizma on the Sziget’s stage and it was crazy. Hopefully we’re gonna do that again during the the tour sometime
CONCERTY: Could you share with us one place you would love to perform next and why?
STAIN THE CANVAS: We’d love to tour the US. But if we had to pick only one place, probably it would be main stage Rock Am Ring, Germany
CONCERTY: Thanks for chatting with us! One last question: What can fans expect for the beginning of 2025?
STAIN THE CANVAS: New music. Be ready for the next chapter, we’re super excited!
