Zac Brown Band is an American country rock band. They were formed in 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia. The sole founding member was the band’s namesake lead singer, guitarist, and bassist Zac Brown (born in 1978 in Dahlonega, Georgia).
Brown was originally a solo musician, traveling around the country with a fully packed tour schedule and two musicians backing him at his shows. Starting in 2002, he gradually added more and more members to his backup band. Drummer Marcus Petruska and guitarist Jacob Lawson were the two artists in his backup originally, who were joined by tenor vocalist and fiddle player Jimmy De Martini in 2004, then Brown’s old acquaintance, bassist John Driskell Hopkins in 2005. In the meantime, Brown started his own music label Home Grown (later renamed Southern Ground), and his own restaurant and music club in Georgia called Zac’s Place. He soon sold that restaurant and invested that money into a tour bus.
They continued to do live Zac Brown Band concert shows across America for the next few years. Zac BrownBand’s debut single, “Chicken Fried”, was only released in 2008 despite being recorded back in 2003. The same song was also covered by another country band, “The Lost Trailers”, and was even included on one of their albums. This later led to a legal battle between the artists. The Zac Brown Band's debut album came out in November 2008, with the title “The Foundation”. It became a massive success, peaking at the #2 spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, while reaching the #9 spot on the overall Billboard 200 chart.
Since then, the country rock band has put out 6 more studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. The best selling one among them has remained their first one, “Foundation” from 2008, which sold around 5.1 million copies. Meanwhile, the latest new Zac Brown Band album came out in November 2021, with the title “The Comeback”. Their biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Chicken Fried” (2008), “Colder Weather” (2010), “Knee Deep” (also 2010) featuring Jimmy Buffett, and “Sweet Annie” (2012, its music video features footage of band member Coy Bowles’ actual wedding). Their lead singer Brown was also the uncredited vocalist on the 2015 hit single by Swedish DJ Avicii, “Broken Arrows”.
The band’s current line-up is made up of lead singer and founder Zac Brown, fiddle player Di Martini, former bassist, now backing vocalist Driskell Hopkins, guitarist Bowles, drummer Chris Fryar, guitarist and slide guitarist Clay Cook, bassist Matt Mangano, percussionist Daniel de los Reyes, and vocalist and banjo player Caroline Jones.
