Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known by his stage names Snoop Dogg, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Snoop Lion, is an American rapper, songwriter, and actor. He was born on October 20, 1971 in Long Beach, California. Snoop Dogg’s legal last name, Broadus, is that of his stepfather, as his biological father left the family when he was just 3 months old. As a child, he sang and played the piano in a choir in a Baptist church. In 6th grade, he started rapping. According to the man himself, when he would rap in the school hallway, huge crowds would form listening to him. As a teenager, he was also caught in the street life of the West Coast. He allegedly joined the Crips gang, which he later denied.
After graduating from high school, he was in and out of jail on drug charges. Also, he started recording rap songs on homemade tapes with his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil ½ Dead, as well as his friend Warren G. The four of them called their hip hop group “213”, after Long Beach’s area code. One of those tapes, which had Snoop Dogg freestyling on it, was found by rapper and music producer Dr. Dre. He was impressed, and the two started working together.
Snoop Dogg’s original stage name, Snoop Doggy Dogg, came from his childhood love and resemblance to the cartoon dog Snoopy. His first gig in the music industry was writing for Dr. Dre, both on Dre’s album “The Chronic” from 1992, and on the theme song of the 1992 action thriller movie “Deep Cover”, which was performed by Dr. Dre.
Snoop Doggy Dogg’s debut album came out in November 1993, with the title “Doggystyle”. It became a massive hit, topping the Billboard 200 chart upon its release. The standout tracks on the record were "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)", and “Gin and Juice”.
The prolific rapper has released 19 full studio albums throughout his career. He changed his stage name to “Snoop Dogg” for the release of his third album, “Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told”, released in August 1998. In 2012, he picked yet another alias for himself after a spiritual awakening in Jamaica, “Snoop Lion”. However, that one didn’t stick with the fans so he went back to Snoop Dogg by 2015.
His best selling album still remains his first one, “Doggystyle” from 1993, which sold 11 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, his latest record is titled “BODR”, which stands for “Back on Death Row”, and came out in February 2022.
Snoop Dogg’s biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Gin and Juice” (1993), “Beautiful” (2002) featuring Pharrell Williams and Charlie Wilson, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” (2004), and “Imagine” featuring Dr. Dre and D’Angelo. He was also featured on the 2013 hit R&B song by Jason Derulo “Wiggle”, and on the 1999 hip hop hit “Still D.R.E.” by his protege Dr. Dre.
