Duman is a Turkish rock band. They were formed in 1999 in Istanbul, Turkey. The founding members were vocalist and guitarist Kaan Tangoze (born in 1973 in Istanbul, Turkey), guitarist Batuhan Mutlugil (1974, Istanbul, Turkey), bassist Ari Barokas (1971), and drummer Alen Konakoğlu.
Frontman Tangoze started his music career in the early 1990’s in Turkey. However, he moved to the United States to study in Seattle, Washington. While there, he continued to create music in Turkish, planning to release it in his home country once he returns. He also played in a Turkish band in Seattle and Los Angeles called “Mad Madame”, along with Barokas.
When the two musicians returned to Turkey, they recruited Mutlugil from the Blues Blues Band to form a new band of their own. They were later joined by Konakoğlu. They named their band after the title of one of their early songs, “Hâlimiz Duman” (which translates to “We Are Smoke” in English). Their debut album came out in November 1999, with the title “Eski Köprünün Altında”. However, the new band hit mainstream success in Turkey after the release of their second record, “Belki Alışman Lazım”, in October 2002. As a result, they got to do live Duman concert shows in major venues across Turkey. Thus, they could also release their first live album, simply titled “Konser” (the Turkish word for “concert”) in 2003, which also sold well.
The band was briefly on hiatus in 2006 until Tangöze and Mutlugil completed their 6 months of military service. However, even though their original label, NR1, dropped them in this period, this didn't set back the career of the Turkish rock stars. They have put out a total of 6 studio albums over the years. The best selling one among them is “Seni Kendime Sakladım”, released in July 2005, which sold around 40,000 copies in Turkey. Meanwhile, the latest new Duman album came out in September 2013, with the title “Darmaduman”.
The biggest hits in the Duman setlist to date are “Ah!” (2002), “Aman Aman” (2004), “Senden Daha Güzel” (2009), and “Helal Olsun” (also 2009). After some changes, their current line-up is made up of three of the four co-founders, lead singer Tangoze, guitarist Mutlugil, and bassist Barokas; as well as drummer Doğaç Titiz.
