Jessica Ellen Cornish, better known by her stage name Jessie J, is an English singer and songwriter. She was born on March 27, 1988 in London, United Kingdom. Jessie J attended Colin's Performing Arts School in Romford, UK. At age 11, she was cast in Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End production of the musical "Whistle Down the Wind". She stayed in the musical theater world, joining the National Youth Music Theatre in London, and appearing in another professional production.
In 2003, she won in the Best Pop Singer category on a TV special called Britain's Brilliant Prodigies. Then, she was performing under her real name, Jessica Cornish. Afterward, she was part of the short-lived girl group "Soul Deep".
She graduated from BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology along with fellow famed singers Adele and Leona Lewis. Her first contract was signed with the British indie label Gut Records, but it went bankrupt before they could release any of her songs. That didn’t hinder Jessie J’s career, however, she got gigs writing for world-famous artists such as Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown, and performed as the opening act for Cyndi Lauper as well. She was discovered by the American label Lava Records after a contact with the company she had a songwriting contract with sent a link to Jessie J’s MySpace page to the company’s president.
Her debut single, “Do It Like a Dude” from 2011, became a hit in the UK, peaking at the #2 spot on the OCC singles chart. Jessie J’s debut album came out in February 2011, with the title “Who You Are”. This one became an international hit, peaking at the #11 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart over in the US. The standout track on the record was “Price Tag” featuring B.o.B.
Since then, the British pop star has released 4 more studio albums, thus she has 5 in total. The best selling one among them has remained her debut record, “Who You Are” from 2011, which sold around 2.4 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Jessie J album is titled “This Christmas Day”, and came out in October 2018.
Jessie J’s biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Do It Like a Dude” (2011) and “Price Tag” (also 2011) featuring B.o.B; as well as “Bang Bang” (2014) featuring Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande, and “Flashlight” (2015), which was included in the soundtrack for the movie "Pitch Perfect 2".
