Steve Thomas Lacy-Moya, better known by his stage name Steve Lacy, is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and music producer. He was born on May 23, 1998 in Compton, California. Lacy was born into an African-Filipino mixed raced family in the rough town of Compton. However, his father was absent for most of his life. Lacy’s first exposure to music was the video game Guitar Hero, which gave him the inspiration to learn to play the actual guitar. He joined the jazz band in his high school, where he met Jameel Bruner, who later became his bandmate in the alt R&B group “The Internet”. Lacy also started to make beats on his iPhone. For a long time into his career, he only used his smartphone to produce music.
His production skills got better and better, so in 2013, he got work on some of the tracks on The Internet’s third album, “Ego Death”, which came out in 2015. That record became a hit. He then went on to do production work for other artists, such as Denzel Curry, J. Cole, and even Kendrick Lamar. In the meantime, Lacy also recorded his first solo demo tape.
In 2015, Lacy joined The Internet as their guitarist. He’s been a member of the band since, and put out one more studio album with them, “Hive Mind”, in July 2018. His debut album as a solo artist came out in May 2019, with the title “Apollo XXI”. It became a moderate hit, peaking at the #160 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in the US. The latest new Steve Lacy album he produced solo, “Gemini Rights” from July 2022, performed much better, however. It reached the #7 spot on Billboard 200.
The biggest hits in the Steve Lacy setlist to date are “Dark Red” (2017), “N Side” (2019), “Sunshine” (2022) featuring Fousheé, and “Bad Habit” (also 2022). He was also featured on Vampire Weekend’s hit single “Sunflower” in 2019. Check where the nearest Steve Lacy concert is playing on the page above.
