Lana Del Rey Biography

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, better known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer and songwriter. She was born on June 21, 1985 in New York City, New York. While Del Rey was born in New York City, her family moved upstate while she was still a toddler. She had a drinking problem as a teenager which she luckily recovered from.

After graduating high school, she moved in with her uncle’s on Long Island - her uncle taught him how to play the guitar there. Subsequently, she started performing in local bars as a singer-guitarist.

She went to college as a philosophy major. During her time in university, she recorded self-produced EP’s and even a full album. After submitting a demo tape to the independent record label 5 Point Records, she got signed by the label with a $10,000 contract. However, she still finished her philosophy degree.

With her career picking up steam, she chose a catchy stage name for herself, “Lana Del Rey”. It is made up of the names of actress Lana Turner and the car model Ford Del Rey. Her self-titled debut album came out in January 2010. Unfortunately, it was a giant flop. It was pulled from the market completely after just 3 months and Del Rey and her label separated.

The up-and-coming singer, however, got a second chance. In January 2012, still under her pseudonym Lana Del Rey, she released her second album “Born to Die”. This time, she had the backing of two major industry players, Interscope Records and Polydor Records. And the result ended up being much, much better. She sold 12 million copies worldwide and reached the #2 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list. Therefore, she got to go on her first nationwide Lana Del Rey concert tour, called the "Born to Die Tour".

Since then, Del Rey has released 6 more studio albums, thus she has 8 in total. The best selling one among them remained the second one, “Born to Die” from 2012. The latest new Lana Del Rey album is titled “Blue Banisters”, which came out in October 2021.

Her biggest hits to date are “Born to Die” (2012, same title as the album), “Summertime Sadness” (also 2012), “Young and Beautiful” (2013), and “Love” (2017). Check wher the next Lana Del Rey concert is playing on our page above.
