Senses Fail is an American rock band. They were formed in 2001 in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The founding members were vocalist James "Buddy" Nielsen (born in 1984 in Ridgewood, New Jersey), drummer Dan Trapp (1986, New Jersey), guitarist Garrett Zablocki (1985), second guitarist Dave Miller (1984), and bassist James Gill.
In October 2001, 17-year-old Nielsen decided to put up an online ad, looking for members for a new band in his hometown of Ridgewood, NJ. Zablocki was the first to respond, then through their mutual acquaintances, the three other boys followed to complete the band’s original line-up. However, Gill was soon kicked out and replaced by Mike Glita. According to frontman Nielsen, the band’s name derived from the Hindu notion that if you wish to reach Nirvana, you have to let all your senses fail.
The new teenage rock band started to do early versions of a Senses Fail concert in small New Jersey clubs and bars. They also started to record their original music. After releasing their first EP in 2002, they got signed by Drive-Thru Records in 2003. Thus, their debut album came out in September 2004, with the title “Let It Enfold You”. It became a moderate hit, reaching the #2 spot on Billboard’s Independent Albums list, while peaking at the #34 spot on the overall Billboard 200 chart. Earlier, in February 2004, they went on their first nationwide Senses Fail concert tour, co-headlined by the Canadian indie rock band Moneen.
Since then, Senses Fail has released 6 more studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. The best selling one among them so far has remained their first one, “Let It Enfold You” from 2004, which sold over 600,000 copies. Meanwhile, the latest new Senses Fail album came out in July 2022, with the title “Hell Is in Your Head”.
The biggest hits in the Senses Fail setlist to date are “Bloody Romance” (2002), “Buried a Lie” (2004), “Bite to Break Skin” (also 2004), and “Calling All Cars” (2006). The band’s line-up has gone through a lot of changes over the years. In fact, lead singer Buddy Nielsen is the sole founding member still on board. The line-up is completed by guitarists and backing vocalists Gavin Caswell and Jason Milbank, and drummer Steve Carey.
