Formed in 2006 in Bowling Green, Kentucky and later relocated to London, UK, Cage the Elephant is a rock band that has very significant importance to alternative rock and indie rock genres. The band members are vocalist Matt Shultz, his older brother, and guitarist Brad Shultz, lead guitarist Nick Bockrath, keyboard and guitarist Matthan Minster, bassist Daniel Tichenor, and drummer Jared Champion. The band first hit success on radio throughout the USA and the UK and had a heavy influence from classic rock bands, like Nirvana.
Just like most alternative rock bands, their first album is the so-called "self-titled album," after that, the band's second album named "Thank You, Happy Birthday," brought a new energy for the band, selling over 39,000 copies during its first week in the U.S., debuting at Number 2 on the Billboard 200.
"Melophobia," "Tell Me I'm Pretty," "Social Cues," and "Neon Pill" were released after that. The album "Neon Pill" came as a surprise for the band's fans, as the band had not released any new songs for over five years.
In 2024, Matt Shultz, the band's lead singer, shared that he was suffering from a mental health crisis leading up to his arrest last year for possession of two loaded guns. "It's a miracle that I'm here today," Shultz wrote in a statement posted to Instagram.
As for the band's name, it comes from a very original story, In a 2010 interview Matt said the rebranding occurred after a man approached him after a show in Tennessee, hugging him and repeating "you have to cage the elephant." Not something you listen to every day, and a very original name for a band.
