Collective Soul is an American rock band. They were formed in 1992 in Stockbridge, Georgia. The founding members were lead vocalist and keyboardist Ed Roland (born in 1963 in Stockbridge, Georgia), Ed’s brother, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland (1972, Stockbridge, Georgia), lead guitarist Ross Childress (1971, Stockbridge, Georgia), bassist Will Turpin (1971, Fairbanks, Alaska), and drummer Shane Evans (1970).
Co-founder and frontman Ed Roland graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, majoring in music composition. Therefore, he was making a living producing and mixing music for underground artists in Atlanta, Georgia. He first recruited a 4-men ensemble, and performed with them live, under the name “Ed-E”. They even appeared on local television a couple times, but the project ultimately went nowhere. Roland “went through” another band co-founded by him, before putting together a third music group to record a demo tape with in his basement in 1992. He named that fresh new band of his “Collective Soul”, after a phrase found in the 1943 Ayn Rand novel “The Fountainhead”. One of the songs off of that demo tape, “Shine”, became a hit at Georgia State University's college radio. To the surprise of even Roland himself, the same song also made its way down to Florida, where it also got plenty of airtime on local radio stations. As a result, they got to start doing live Collective Soul concert shows across various venues.
This all ultimately led to the band signing with the major American label Atlantic Records, who re-released their demo tape under the title “Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid” in March 1994. And it turned out to be a good move, as the record became quite a hit. It peaked at #3 on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heateekers chart, and also reached the #15 spot on the famous overall Billboard 200 chart. Their second album, the self-titled “Collective Soul” from March 1995, became an even bigger success, going triple platinum and spending 76 weeks straight on the Billboard 200 chart.
Since then, the Georgia-based rockers have released 9 more albums, thus they have 11 in total. The best selling among them is the aforementioned “Collective Soul” from 1995, which sold around 3.9 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Collective Soul album came out in August 2022, with the title “Vibrating”.
The biggest hits in the Collective Soul setlist to date are “Shine” (1993), “The World I Know” (1995), “December” (also 1995), and “Heavy” (1999). After quite a few changes, the band’s current line-up is made up of three of the five co-founders, lead vocalist and keyboardist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, and bassist Will Turpin; as well as drummer Johnny Rabb, lead guitarist Jesse Triplett.
